20 Years ‘In the Zone’ With Britney Spears.

Los Angeles CA November 07th, 2023
(Shondaland) Britney Spears truly grew up at least musically — with the release of her electro-sleek classic In the Zone. Released November 1, 2003, the album saw the then-21-year-old Spears seeking to evolve her sound by co-writing the majority of the tracks and adding a variety of other genres, moods, and collaborators in search of her own Ray of Light moment.

And she largely succeeded: In the Zone debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, went triple platinum, and helped Spears win her first-ever Grammy. Although it couldn’t match her commercial zenith during the heyday of teen pop just a few years prior, it proved that everyone’s favorite gum-chomping goddess was still an important draw for fans of all ages, with an increasingly mature sound to match her moves. Most importantly, of course, is the music, and there are some essential jams in the Book of Britney, so let’s all give thanks to the Holy Spearit.

“Me Against the Music” featuring Madonna

The lead single off the album, this frenetic duet was positioned to be Britney’s big statement: Look, Madonna is officially anointing her the heir to the throne! Although it became a worldwide hit and topped the charts in multiple countries, the song failed to fully catch fire in the U.S. the way you might expect, especially after Madonna and Britney had scandalized the globe a couple months earlier with their now-iconic VMA kiss. Surprisingly, the song stalled on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at No. 35 and had more of an impact through some memorable parodies, both respectful and not so much. (Intriguingly, the first song its main writers pitched to Spears was a little ditty called “Pop Culture Whore” that the singer shot down. Gotta wonder what that would’ve sounded like!).

“(I Got That) Boom Boom” featuring Ying Yang Twins

Dedicated ostensibly to “all those Southern boys out there,” this countrified urban-banjo bop makes sense on paper, marrying Spears’ Louisiana heritage with dancey R&B pop and, of course, the singer’s unparalleled affinity for crooning sexy baby-did-a-bad-bad-thing lyrics like “boom boom.” Sadly, the Ying Yang Twins had already released their masterpiece the previous month, and so rather than achieving salty perfection for a second time, their bayou gumbo turned out a little flavorless. Still, it’s an interesting cut that seems as if it could turn into a perfect mash-up with “Alright” by Janet Jackson, one of Spears’ heroes. Let’s hope someone makes that happen.

“Showdown”

A Cathy Dennis co-write, this reggae-laced jam finds the normally uptempo Spears riding the beat with an appealing laid-back vibe. (Both her vocal and the song itself seem to prefigure this classic that would come out three years later.) Alluring in its coy way, the lyrics find Spears cooing slow-burning lines like “I don’t really wanna be a tease/But would you undo my zipper, please?” While the subject matter may not have been that unfamiliar to fans at the time, the song’s production feels a lot more grown-up. This is a respectable album cut; no shame in that.

“Breathe on Me”

Now, the album starts to get really interesting with arguably the sexiest song in the entire Spears oeuvre, where her restrained approach proves electrifying. Singing about an erotic connection so powerful that touch isn’t even required to get her off, Spears has never sounded so adult, confident, or exciting. With a languid production and vocal that builds and falls and builds and falls, this is a surprisingly classy ode to one of the most universal of urges. (Extra points for the shout-out to monogamy that feels like a tribute to a fellow song scholar of sex.) It’s a shame this was never a single.

“Early Mornin’”

Things take a bit of an electro left turn with this odd song produced and co-written by Moby, a woozy tribute to the post-all-night-sexy-partying feeling. (Or as the poetess herself robo-moans, “I was shaking my ass in the stress ’til mornin.’” Who hasn’t been there?) The burbling little touches that send the hungover beat and Britney spinning back into the next wild adventure get more irresistible with each listen, and just when you’re ready to dismiss this as a trifle, you find yourself hitting repeat one more time. A well-crafted slice of sleaze that goes down sweet, this is pop for grown-ups in the best way possible.

“Toxic”

Maybe the best Britney song — perhaps even of that entire era and to some, even across history — “Toxic” achieves the kind of iconic status that makes it hard to imagine there was ever a time before those Casio keyboard flute settings were menacing us all. Winning Spears her first Grammy, topping charts around the world, and reaching No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, this the kind of career-defining song any artist would kill for, and it’s hard to imagine any other artist doing it justice — or looking more iconic as a flight attendant. That includes Kylie Minogue, who turned it down for some reason, despite it being written by Cathy Dennis. Dennis had contributed to Minogue’s Body Language album, which came out a little more than a week after In the Zone. (Ironically, Minogue’s most recent single when “Toxic” debuted was almost its dark mirror image, the sleek “Slow.”) Ultimately, Britney Spears was the only choice to record this, and pop just does not get any better.

“Outrageous”

While filming the basketball-themed video for this song, Spears injured her knee during a dance number and had to be rushed into surgery. Her recovery ended up canceling the remainder of the shoot as well as the rest of the run of the Onyx Tour; the song itself only made it to No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. A slinky jam built around a throbbing refrain, “Outrageous” was actually Jive Records’ top choice for lead single, which boggles the mind. I mean, it’s a fine thumper, but far superior is the track that replaced it as the theme song for Halle Berry’s Catwoman. (Although some Spears purists reworked the scene as it would have been.).

“Touch of My Hand”

With a Middle Eastern-tinged production that stings softly but hits hard, Spears warbles about the pleasures of self-love, dipping her vocals in and out of the autotune robo effect that had worked such magic for Cher five years prior. Although Spears chooses to glide toward ecstasy where Cyndi Lauper opted to aggressively she-bop, she sounds fully adult, completely in control, and very sensual. It’s a great look for Spears, who was frequently criticized for performing sexuality for the benefit of audiences rather than authentically owning her own experience — she sounds completely empowered and present on this supple jam.

“The Hook Up”

This reggae-lite number suits Spears to a tee, pulsing and twirling and writhing around her as her vocals go from girlish to growling. As winning as this charmer is, however, this is definitely a track that would have really slapped if it had been delivered by a more authentic island icon who would debut two years later. Still, this song adds another element to help round out the overall sound of the set and goes down very smooth no matter how many times you choose to (pon de) replay it.

“Shadow”

Something of a power ballad — although it stays in graceful yearning mode rather than busting out into full-on emoting — this song lets Spears belt some big notes. Something of a cousin to the Shania Twain co-penned “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know,” this is the musical tale of a lover who keeps pulling away so much that they barely ever fully existed in the relationship. For those who feel that Spears’ throaty singing is too strained or that she’s too much of a studio creation, it’s interesting to check out her live vocals on this challenging number during the Onyx Hotel tour. There’s something moving about the combination of song and singer, flaws and all, and it hits home how Spears seems to really connect with the sadder music and messages in her work.

“Brave New Girl”

This uptempo electro anthem of independence has an unusual distinction. It inspired the title of the 2004 movie version of the 2001 novel A Mother’s Gift, co-written by Spears and her mother, Lynne. In so many ways a theme song for Spears herself, she memorably celebrated being released from her conservatorship in 2021 with a dance video to this tune. (Oh, the doctoral dissertations that have yet to be written about the multivalent meanings behind this video!) While the song itself doesn’t really stand out all that much, it will always be precious to Spears fans for its importance to the singer, both metaphorically and literally.

“Everytime”

A delicate, devastatingly powerful music-box response to Justin Timberlake’s syncopated first solo single, this is my vote for the greatest song in the entire Spears catalog. Not only did she single-handedly compose the music, but she also co-wrote the lyrics with her backing singer Annet Artani. Both the vocal and the production are so achingly raw, sad, and vulnerable that it totally tracks that Spears’ original treatment for the controversial music video was for her thinly veiled alter ego to commit suicide.

With apologies to the later Britney Jean promo, this is truly the most personal song Spears or any of her peers has ever recorded. This song showcases just how far Spears had come as a performer, pop culture figure, and true musician since the (likable) trifles of her early days. Maybe one day we’ll get her sadcore album.

#FreeBritney Movement. Now They Want Justice.

Los Angeles, CA (Rolling Stone Magazine). January 22th, 2022. The anticipation was mounting as #FreeBritney L.A. leader Kevin Wu stood among hundreds of Britney Spears fans outside of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse on Nov. 12, waiting to hear whether the pop star would be set free from her 13-year conservatorship. After countless rallies, protests, and social media campaigns calling for Spears’ release, word finally reached the masses and confetti cannons painted the asphalt rainbow: Spears was free. “I was just losing my mind,” Wu — a data analyst by day — tells Rolling Stone. “It was rewarding to see that our years of advocacy had finally paid off.”.

Wu is just one of the hundreds of Spears aficionados worldwide who count themselves as part of the group behind the hashtag #FreeBritney — made up of a large faction of the pop star’s fans along with others outraged by her situation — who’s long advocated for Spears’ release from her conservatorship. While Spears’ father, Jamie, called the group a “joke” and a “conspiracy theory” when he was still in control of her finances, the pop star credited them with helping free her from her dad’s control by raising awareness of her case. “I have no words … because of you guys and your constant resilience in freeing me from my conservatorship … my life is now in that direction,” Spears tweeted in October after her dad was suspended as her conservator at the end of September. “I cried last night for two hours cause my fans are the best and I know it.”

Still, more than two months after that fateful day — as new legislation moves forward dedicated to overhauling conservatorship law in California thanks to Spears’ case, and rogue stans unleash their venom on Spears’ sister, Jamie Lynn, and her controversial memoir — #FreeBritney’s advocacy work is not done, members say “We accomplished our initial goal, but as the movement acquired more knowledge about the whole system, we evolved,” says Leanne Simmons, one of the leaders of #FreeBritney L.A. “Now, there’s a larger goal ahead of us: To change the system so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

“It’s Time to Reclaim the Legacy That She Built”

The 13 years of Spears’ conservatorship — which followed a number of public troubles in 2008 — were filled with their share of twists and turns. She went on tour, hosted and canceled a Las Vegas residency, served as a judge on The X-Factor, and declared an “indefinite work hiatus” in 2019 — all while her father legally controlled her assets, valued at $60 million. At the time, fans started to become concerned about their idol after she began sharing strange posts, including a video in which she rocked back and forth while wearing thick-lined mascara and selfies in which she seemed distraught. But it wasn’t until an anonymous tip about her well-being was sent to a Spears stan account podcast called Britney’s Gram — which analyzed her Instagram posts — that fans started to actively raise awareness about her situation, even starting Change.org and White House petitions (with more than 250,000 signatures combined) clamoring for the freedom of Britney Spears.

Since the start of the movement, the hashtag #FreeBritney has become a household name and led thousands of people to gather for rallies and protests, all in the name of Spears. And, over the past year, Spears’ case advanced swiftly, thanks in part to her June appearance in court, where she addressed Judge Brenda Penny directly and accused Jamie — who has become a villain in the eyes of Spears’ supporters — of conservatorship abuse. “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy. It’s a lie. … I am traumatized,” she said at the time. Just months later, in September, Jamie was removed as her conservator and, in November, Spears’ conservatorship was terminated altogether.

For Shrewsbury, the next goal is ensuring Spears regains control of her finances and the future of her career — and also holding any bad players in her conservatorship accountable, primarily those in her family and her former management company, TriStar, which have been criticized by Spears’ own attorney for their alleged misdoings.

“The only thing we can do, since she is free, is to go through the documents and find the truth behind it all,” says Raven Koontz, a legal assistant with the Twitter account. That means lining up what’s shown in the documents and the information that’s been divulged to the public to provide fans with clarity on what the truth really is. “The whole point of the movement was finding the truth behind the abuses of the conservatorship,” she adds. Along with Spears herself, her attorney Rosengart has praised the movement and its efforts in disseminating information about the case and drawing awareness to the issues with it. “I think the support of the #FreeBritney movement has been instrumental,” Rosengart said in a press conference following a September hearing. “To the extent that it allowed my firm to carry the ball across the finish line. I thank them.”

As Spears’ case progresses, the @BritneyLawArmy has positioned itself as a leader in keeping the #FreeBritney community — and others simply interested in her case — informed by ensuring accurate information about Spears is shared online. “It all comes down to her getting her money back and righting any wrongs that were done to her,” adds attorney Sam Nicholson, who founded the account. “We want to see her free and made whole again: both emotionally and financially.”

“That Bond With Britney Can Lead to This Sort of Herd Mentality”

While #FreeBritney had largely been a tool for good, there is a downside: Stan accounts some anonymous and others featuring Spears as their profile picture who use the movement as an excuse to attack people they perceive to be Spears’ enemies. Most recently, their target has been her younger sister, Jamie Lynn, who released a memoir, Things I Should Have Said, on Jan. 19. Just the other week, Spears and Jamie Lynn feuded online as the pop star accused her younger sister of using her name to sell books. Spears’ attorney even sent Jamie Lynn a cease-and-desist letter. Inevitably, every time Spears spoke out against her sister in front of her 56 million Twitter followers, thousands of nasty, often threatening messages came Jamie Lynn’s way.

And having the luxury of doing so behind a screen makes it even easier, adds Dr. J. cott Jordan, chair of psychology at Illinois State University. “There are these social connections we share in face-to-face communication that tend to keep us from being really, really hostile to other people,” he explains. “When we get to the online environment, however, we don’t see that other person, so any shame, any empathy we might feel because we hurt someone, we don’t experience because we’re not seeing you.”

Being part of a collective — such as the #FreeBritney movement — can also lead people to form an allegiance to the group and minimize individual thinking. “That bond with Britney can lead to this sort of herd mentality where you don’t humanize the people who dislike her,” explains Gabriel. “You dehumanize the people who you see as being ‘on the other side.’ “For movement leaders like #FreeBritney L.A.’s Wu and @BritneyLawArmy’s Nicholson, these “bad actors” contribute to a negative image for a movement that, they say, was built on love for Spears.

“I don’t condone vitriol like that,” says Wu, but opines that applying pressure on folks like Jamie Lynn online is necessary. “I think that it’s deplorable that Jamie Lynn is going on this book tour. I believe that it’s part of the strategy to paint Britney in a bad light, and I think the movement is doing the right thing by calling her out for it.”

For Nicholson, there’s a distinction between stans spewing hatred and those being productive and pushing for change. “I think you can see the difference between [the two],” he says. “A Britney fan approaches criticism of Jamie Lynn from an emotional standpoint, whereas #FreeBritney people are very sophisticated. … If they take issue with something Jamie Lynn said, they come from an objective standpoint and point out inconsistencies.” He adds: “The #FreeBritney movement is a rare case study of social media, a particularly toxic echo chamber, being used for positive change. I think we’ll be looking for ways to re-create that for advocacy in different areas.”

“These Issues Were Bigger Than Britney”

Aside from Spears’ battles in court — and the one raging among fans — some #FreeBritney folks are looking at the bigger picture: conservatorship law. While the number of conservatees in Spears’ home state of California is unclear due to lack of self-reports from some of its biggest counties, data from the Department of Healthcare Services shows that more than 3,600 people were under permanent conservatorships in the state in 2020. Spears’ case, thanks in part to the #FreeBritney movement, shined a light on how easy it is for

conservatees to be taken advantage of under the current system.

As such, another group of #FreeBritney advocates is using the momentum of her case to take aim at conservatorship as a whole in California. Currently, it’s not all that difficult for California courts to place people — typically elderly, mentally ill, or disabled folks — under strict financial and often personal control of a person appointed by a probate court judge, sometimes a family member. Assembly member Brian Maienschein, for one, was inspired by Spears, and on Jan. 29 introduced the Probate Conservatorship Reform and Supported Decision-Making Act, a bill aimed at reforming the system in California. Maienschein, who served as a clerk at a probate court before becoming a legislator, says that reforming law surrounding guardianship has always been an important issue to him. Spears’ case made it a priority. “The case activated people who had never heard of this before,” he says. “I think her situation would have turned out much differently had my bill been in place.”

Maienschein called on leaders of #FreeBritney L.A., including Wu and Simmons, to help draft the bill, which would present “supportive decision-making” as an alternative for conservatorships, require courts to prove that a conservatorship is the last resort for a conservatee, and also make it easier for conservatorships to be dissolved. “It’s going to make sure that conservatees know and understand their rights,” Maienschein says. “Britney Spears said that she wasn’t aware of what her rights were.” (During her bombshell court speech last summer, Spears said she “didn’t know” she could petition to end her conservatorship.) “Just having that at the initial process makes sure that these decisions are more educated, more thought out, and ultimately more beneficial for everyone,” Maienschein adds.

The #FreeBritney activists and their expertise were crucial in the bill-creation process, according to the assemblyman. And — aided by state disability-rights activists — the #FreeBritney folks’ ability to raise awareness for an issue often ignored will be indispensable moving forward, says Maienschien. “They saw what happened to Britney Spears and were moved by that,” says the legislator. “They’re going to be necessary to move this through the finish line.” For Simmons, who’s dedicated much of her free time to #FreeBritney, getting the bill signed into law is an absolute priority. She says that she and other activists met with leaders of Southern California’s Disability Voices United and “realized that these issues were bigger than Britney.” “If we join forces, we can be that much stronger and have a better chance at making change,” she says. “You need a lot of people to pay attention in order to make change. We’ve met with advocates who want to reform the system and their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. There wasn’t enough public pressure. That’s what we bring to the table.” It will be months before the state Assembly takes a vote on the bill, which has not yet faced opposition. Legislators will discuss the bill, numbered AB1663, at a policy-committee hearing in March or April.

“It’s Up to Britney Now”

With a bill promising sweeping changes to conservatorship law hanging in the balance, a seemingly endless feud between the Spears sisters still in the mix, and Spears’ own legal proceedings upcoming in the next several months, hashtag #JusticeForBritney has become the new #FreeBritney. From Wu’s perspective, while the confetti cannons and celebrations are now a thing of the past, he remains hopeful for what’s to come in both legislative advances for conservatorships and positive changes in Spears’ future. Will she do a tell-all interview with Oprah? Release new music? Retire completely? “It’s up to Britney now,” he says. “We were advocating for her freedom and we want her to do whatever she wants with her career: Whether it’s making music and performing or retiring altogether,” Wu says. He then admits, “But it’s fine to get excited about the possibilities now that she is free.”

Britney Album turns 20 years,

New York City October 29th, 2021 (SteroeGum). Twenty years ago Britney Spears recorded “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman.” A goopy piano line and a karaoke-bar drum machine preset signal its seriousness. She and producer Max Martin wanted a ballad manifesto for Crossroads, a road-trip film about being Britney Spears but with Dan Aykroyd as the father resisting her maturation. For their idea of sensitive lyrics they tapped Dido Armstrong, whose “Thank You” turned into a massive hit in its own right after Eminem’s fan-ambivalent “Stan” interpolated its chorus. Recorded in Stockholm with Martin’s crew, “I’m Not A Girl” boasts a solid Spears performance; she sings the words in her thin, whiskery, fey timbre. She sounds like neither girl nor woman: She sounds as if the pitch-altered Prince of “U Got The Look” had imitated a senior citizen. The result is weird, powerful, and listenable — check out that key change in its last third, where she goes for it — if not quite a triumph.

“Weird, powerful, and listenable” also describes Britney, the album Spears released the last week of October 2001, 20 years ago this Saturday. Not quite a triumph either. Fizzing up the giddy aerobicized climaxes of Martinized grease-free pop with crucial songwriting/producing contributions from the Neptunes, Spears wanted what every pop star since 1983 had done when they conflated maturity with sexual availability. But she couldn’t get Prince in 2001 No Doubt got him first, sorry. Instead, she got Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo at the apogee of their first fame.

You know who also reached his own apogee? An ornery, stupendously incurious governor of Texas whom the Supreme Court made president and who as president oversaw the most spectacular intelligence failure in American history. Despite the croakings of doom from traditional media types who while rubbing their chins pondered whether we had watched the death of irony, pop music during the 9/11 era was as glorious as the times were low and dishonest. The pop environment in which Spears released Britney was not escapist; it reflected the aspirations and lusts shaped by Total Request Live and Nightline as much as by consumer preferences — same as it ever was.

But the multivalent conversation between R&B and hip-hop got those consumer corpuscles flowing. Occasionally the former got harder, the latter got softer. On the week Britney‘s biggest hit “I’m A Slave 4 U” peaked at #27, it shared chart space with Shakira, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Ja Rule, and Ginuwine. Slush-o-ramas like Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero” and Enya’s tidal love-is-the-seventh-wave “Only Time” were huge too, indicative of the collective mourning. Creed’s garlic-breathed “My Sacrifice” too. Otherwise a ruthlessly concentrated and densely percussive frivolity reigned.

Britney Spears 'Domination' Residency Las Vegas 2019

Las Vegas, NV United States of America October 22nd, 2018 (Billboard). Britney Spears took to The Ellen Show's YouTube channel on Oct. 18 to announce that her Domination Las Vegas residency will start in Feb. 2019 at the MGM Park Theater, and fans are, naturally, flipping out.

The Britney Army’s response to the news was met with a mix of excitement at her return on the Las Vegas Strip and a bit of disappointment at the muted reveal. Spears rose onto the stage, lit by fireworks and the word "Domination" written in neon, but without performing or commenting on the residency, left wordlessly.

Some Britney stans had a whole lot of fun at their queen's expense, while others were left in awe at the pop star's majesty. “Only Britney would make an announcement without even talking,” one Twitter commenter wrote.

20th Aniversary of ...Baby One More Time.

New York City (NY-USA) October 19th, 2018 (E! News). Oh baby, baby, Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" is almost 20 years old!

Which means it's been almost 20 years since the singer rose to fame and wow, what a ride it's been. The pop star, who remains one of the most popular music artists in the world, reflects on the success of the song in an interview with The Guardian, posted on Saturday.

"...Baby One More Time," her debut single, was released in October 1998 and was accompanied by what has become one of the most iconic music videos of all time: A clip depicting Spears as a sexy schoolgirl.

"The whole song is about that stress that we all go through as teens," Spears told The Guardian. "I knew it was a great song. It was different and I loved it, [but] I don't think you can anticipate how a song is going to be received."

he single, which is also about a girl begging for her ex-boyfriend to call her, reached No. 1 in music charts in the United States and at least 10 other countries and sold more than 1 million copies domestically.

Spears almost didn't get to record the track, which was written by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub. R&B group TLC was offered it before her, as was Swedish singer Robyn.

"I was like, I like the song but do I think it's a hit? Do I think it's TLC? I'm not saying, 'Hit me baby.' No disrespect to Britney," member Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins told MTV News in 2013. "It's good for her. But was I going to say, 'Hit me baby one more time'? Hell no!"

"That's not even my subject of conversation, so you know, it worked for her, I'm happy for her, I like Britney," T-Boz continued. "Every song isn't good for each artist, and when you're a real artist you know what you believe in and what you really want to sing. So, I'm clear that it was a hit, but I'm also clear that it wasn't for TLC."

Spears recorded "...Baby One More Time" and others songs for her debut album by the same name in Sweden. Co-writer Yacoub told The Guardian he remembers the singer as "very shy and super sweet," adding, "I mean she was a kid and we had no idea there was a beast of an artist lurking under that innocent look."

After Spears finished recording, she set off on a shopping mall solo tour in her native United States. Months later, "...Baby One More Time" was released and was certified gold after a month. And the rest is history.

"Wow, that went quick. It was such a fun and crazy time," Spears told The Guardian. "It was a bit of a blur."

Happy #BritneyDay In Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Nevada, USA., to November 15th, 2014 (The Huffington Post). Britney Spears officially has her own holiday now, thanks to the city of Las Vegas. Because of her successful ongoing residency at Planet Hollywood, the Clark County Commission is honoring Spears with her own "Britney Day" on Nov. 5, along with a key to the Vegas strip. In the spirit of "Britney Day," the "Toxic" singer will spend the day hanging with fans at the LINQ promenade.

But wait -- there's more! The pop icon is also extending a special invitation to the fellow Britneys of the world, or anyone named Britney with any variation of spelling. The first 100 “Britney’s” who check in at the High Roller Wheel House with an I.D. starting at 8 a.m. on Nov. 5 will receive a pair of tickets to her Vegas show that night.

Britney Spears In Las Vegas.

También cantaron las familiares letras de Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again, Toxic, Circus, Womanizer y Slave 4 U. El show incluye canciones de su nuevo álbum Britney Jean.
“Celine trajo a Elton (John), Celine trajo a Rod Stewart, Celine trajo a Shania (Twain)”, dijo.

(US).
