2017 FIFA Club World Cup.

Zayed Sports City Stadium Abu Dhabi, December 16th, 2017 (The Guardian). Ronaldo, who won the Ballon d’Or and player of the year awards this year, broke the deadlock after 53 minutes when he clipped the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner. The hard-earned victory over a stubborn Grêmio side at the Zayed Sports City Stadium was Real’s third Club World Cup since 2014, equalling the record of their La Liga rivals Barcelona.

Full-time: Real Madrid 1-0 Gremio

Real started brightly when Karim Benzema’s effort was deflected behind. Ronaldo then curled a shot wide before Isco fired over. As the half-hour mark approached, the Brazilian side had a chance to threaten when Casemiro conceded a free-kick 30 yards out. Edílson’s long-range effort flew just over.

Ronaldo found himself with a clear sight of the Grêmio goal after benefiting from a deflection but could not get the ball under control and as half-time approached, it was then Ronaldo’s turn to fire in a free-kick from distance, which again was narrowly too high.

The Champions League holders continued to press early in the second half, Ronaldo sending another long-range shot wide before the deadlock was finally broken .

The Portugal forward was tripped just outside the Grêmio penalty area by Jailson. Ronaldo got up to take the free-kick himself and he sent it over the wall and down into the bottom left corner, past the diving goalkeeper.

Grêmio, who beat the Mexican side Pachuca to secure a place in Saturday’s final, were then forced to go on the attack but lacked any real threat.

It looked as if Real had scored again just before the hour, but Ronaldo’s effort was ruled out by an offside flag.

The Grêmio goalkeeper, Marcelo Grohe, then pushed a 20-yard effort from Luka Modric on to the post as Real continued to press. With 10 minutes left Gareth Bale replaced Benzema and the Wales forward soon forced Grohe into another good save, this time tipping his curling shot over.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Los Angeles, CA (United States of America). December 15th, 2017 (CNBC). When it was released in 1977, the first Star Wars movie only bore the title Star Wars. Later, the subtitle A New Hope was added — and with it, a subtle intimation of what this series is all about. The Star Wars saga explores lots of ideas, but one it keeps cycling back to is the idea of hope. Where does it come from? Why? And when it looks like the last glimmer of hope has been extinguished, is there any reason to go on?

For decades, each Star Wars installment has explored those ideas, moving from hope to despair and back again as a fundamentally moral political battle wages between a dark side bent on its own immense power and a scrappy bunch of rebels who dare to think everyone matters. And now, 40 years after it all started, the eighth installment in the Star Wars series, The Last Jedi, retreads that basic setup with a mastery that isn't just reminiscent of the series' best entries, but takes its place alongside them.

The strength of 2015's The Force Awakens came from its careful retreading of ground that was already broken by earlier Star Wars films, in ways that pleased fans who were terrified this new trilogy would repeat the mistakes of George Lucas's "prequel" trilogy. The Force Awakens calmed fears, reminded viewers why the series worked in the first place, and introduced a more diverse set of characters that made the whole Star Wars thing feel fresh and fun again.

And yet, if The Force Awakens was a great variation on a theme, then The Last Jedi is another movement altogether in the symphony. There are images in this movie that provoke awe and delight, and creatures that feel lifted out of half-remembered childhood dreams. And though it briefly appears to lose steam in the middle, that's short-lived, with a third act harboring sequences that feel like a maestro conducting a concerto the size of the cosmos.

There is catharsis aplenty, something the Star Wars movies are designed for, encouraging us to cheer when our favorite characters show up on screen and letting us thrill to the chases and the romance and the vistas and the explosions and the lightsaber battles. (This installment has one of the most purely perfect lightsaber battles the series has yielded thus far.) But as written and directed by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi doesn't just feel like a well-executed Star Warsmovie — it feels like a well-executed movie, period, one that keeps its eye on the relationships between characters, and how they communicate with one another, in addition to the bigger picture.

Some of this has to do with the fact that The Force Awakens did the heavy lifting by introducing (or in some cases reintroducing) these characters to us, so Johnson doesn't have to start from scratch. But one of Johnson's strengths as a writer and director has always been injecting humanity and intelligence into characters who live inside familiar genres; they're definitely characters, but they're people, too. He knows how to make us feel for them.

That means that a character like the loser General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson as a marvelous sad sap), locked in his eternal battle with Kylo Ren for dominance and the attention of Supreme Commander Snoke (Andy Serkis), is the butt of many jokes, but he also has a glimmer of the unwanted pet dog about him that lends a little pathos to our scorn.

It means we get a character like Rose, who trips believably over herself when she first meets Resistance Hero Finn, but quickly shows she's brilliant, and has a strong and courageous side too. It means Luke becomes more than a reclusive hero-in-waiting, coming to recognize the battle that's been raging inside of him and how it colors the way he interacts with the world, and with Rey.

Thanks to Johnson's impish sense of humor, the film is littered with jokes — some of the best obviously nod to various fan theories that have sprung up in The Force Awaken's wake — as well as allusions to other films and a truly wonderful menagerie of fauna ranging far beyond the already-beloved puffin-like porgs, all of which brings warmth and humor to a story that is, at its core, very serious.

But the best details are in the strong bonds that develop between characters, and the way those bonds show who each individual really is. When one character says that the only way to live free is to not join, it's the film's encapsulation of what constitutes a bad guy: Star Wars films are testaments to the idea that nobody, not even a Jedi Master, can go it alone without getting destroyed.

7.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Mexico City 19-S.

Mexico City to September 19th, 2017 (FOX News Channel). The earthquake was centered near the Puebla state town of Raboso, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City. A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck the central Mexican state of Puebla on Tuesday afternoon, leveling buildings as far away as the capital, about 75 miles away. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Preliminary reports put the epicenter 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) east-northeast of San Juan Raboso and 34.1 miles (55 km) south-southwest of the city of Puebla, according to the US Geological Survey. Pictures on social media and witness accounts confirmed the quake collapsed buildings.

The earthquake struck at a depth of about 33 miles (51 km). Desperate searchers shouted "quiet" and listened for faint voices in the rubble where a Mexican school once stood, as rescuers used trained dogs and their bare hands to reach any survivors of Tuesday's magnitude-7.1 earthquake that killed more than 200 people.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto declared three days of national mourning on Wednesday to honor the victims in the country’s deadliest earthquake since 1985. The powerful quake struck near the town of Raboso in Puebla, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. By Wednesday, the death toll rose to 226 after the quake toppled homes, schools and apartment buildings.

"We dug holes, then crawled in on our bellies," volunteer rescue worker Pedro Serrano, 29, a doctor, told The Associated Press. "We managed to get into a collapsed classroom. We saw some chairs and wooden tables. The next thing we saw was a leg, and then we started to move rubble and we found a girl and two adults — a woman and a man."

At least 25 bodies were recovered from Escuela Enrique Rebsamen – all but four of the victims were children. Serrano said he found all the people in a classroom dead, and heard “small noises” near the site, though it’s unclear which direction it was coming from. A mix of neighborhood volunteers, police and firefighters used trained dogs and their bare hands to search through the school's rubble. The crowd of anxious parents outside the gates shared reports that two families had received Whatsapp messages from girls trapped inside, but that could not be confirmed.

Rescuers were able to find some people alive under the rubble. A child was found under a pile of rubble in the Mexico City school after workers spotted her and yelled at her to move her hand if she could hear them, Foro TV reported. A search dog entered the wreckage and confirmed she was alive. Most of the deaths have been reported in Mexico City, where at least 94 people were killed, Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national civil defense agency, said. Another 71 people were killed in Morelos state, 43 in Puebla, 12 in the State of Mexico, four in Guerrero and one in Oaxaca.

The deadly earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed 10,000 people. Residents in Mexico had conducted earthquake drills just hours earlier. The earthquake occurred just two weeks after a magnitude-8.1 tremor in the south of the country killed more than 90 people and caused buildings in Mexico City to sway for more than a minute. Nieto called that earthquake the biggest quake the country has seen in a century – until now.

President Trump and Nieto “had a lengthy call” on Wednesday to speak about the tragedy, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said. Trump tweeted "God bless the people of Mexico City" on Tuesday, after news of the earthquake broke, and added that the U.S. was "with you and will be there for you." Late Tuesday, Mexico's president issued a video statement urging people to stay calm in the aftermath of the quake. Nieto said many people will need help, but the initial focus has to be on finding people trapped in wrecked buildings.

"The priority at this moment is to keep rescuing people who are still trapped and to give medical attention to the injured people," the president said, adding that 40 percent of Mexico City and 60 percent of Morelos state had no electricity.

The federal government declared a state of disaster in Mexico City, freeing up emergency funds. Nieto said he had ordered all hospitals to open their doors to the injured.

Mexico City's mayor said buildings fell at 44 places in the capital alone, and that 50 to 60 people were rescued. Pictures fell from walls, objects were shaken off of flat surfaces and computer monitors toppled over. Some people dived for cover under desks. Damaged buildings in the capital included the Philippines Embassy, but staffers were unhurt. At least 70 people who were in the capital were hospitalized, authorities said.

Market stall vendor Edith Lopez, 25, said she was in a taxi when the quake struck. She said she saw glass bursting out of the windows of some buildings. She was anxiously trying to locate her children, whom she had left in the care of her disabled mother.  Gala Dluzhynska, who was taking a class in Mexico City's Roma district, said the building she was in didn't have "any stairs anymore, only rocks," after the quake hit.

Mexico City's international airport tweeted that it had suspended operations following the quake, although it was not immediately clear how many flights have been affected. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, whose state recently suffered greatly from Hurricane Harvey, offered his condolences on Twitter and said Texas "will continue to offer any support to aid Mexico in their time of need."

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said the U.S. stands "ready to provide assistance should our neighbors request our help." It added that the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is also ready to provide assistance to U.S. citizens who were possibly affected by the quake. Much of Mexico City is built on former lakebed, and the soil is known to amplify the effects of earthquakes even hundreds of miles away.

The 1985 magnitude-8.1 quake lasted between 3 to 5 minutes, collapsed hundreds of buildings, left an estimated 10,000 people dead, and left tens of thousands injured or homeless, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

2017 Total Solar Eclipse Across in USA.

Washington DC USA. Today is monday August 21, 2017 (NASA). All of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totalitycan see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk
.

This celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.

You can see a partial eclipse, where the moon covers only a part of the sun, anywhere in North America (see “Who can see it?”). To see a total eclipse, where the moon fully covers the sun for a short few minutes, you must be in the path of totality. The path of totality is a relatively thin ribbon, around 70 miles wide, that will cross the U.S. from West to East. The first point of contact will be at Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 9:05 a.m. PDT. Totality begins there at 10:16 a.m. PDT. Over the next hour and a half, it will cross through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The total eclipse will end near Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48 p.m. EDT. From there the lunar shadow leaves the United States at 4:09 EDT. Its longest duration will be near Carbondale, Illinois, where the sun will be completely covered for two minutes and 40 seconds.

You never want to look directly at the sun without appropriate protection except during totality. That could severely hurt your eyes. However, there are many ways to safely view an eclipse of the sun including direct viewing – which requires some type of filtering device and indirect viewing where you project an image of the sun onto a screen. Both methods should produce clear images of the partial phase of an eclipse.
